Defensive technologies offer countermeasures, electronic warfare and decoy to protect aircraft by disrupting or misleading the enemy detection and target systems, and overwhelming them. They include radar and infrared jammer, missile warning receiver, chaff/flare gun, towed decoy, and electronic support measures that interfere with radar, communication and tracking signals. Electronic warfare systems have the ability to employ many components of the electromagnetic spectrum, such that the effectiveness of enemy sensors is minimized; decoys may be employed to confuse incoming missiles away the aircraft. These systems are also popular in combat airplanes and unmanned systems and are significant in enhancing survivability in the contested airspace by interfering with the enemy targeting systems, extending decision making time and success rates in the mission in the high threat environment where advanced radar-guided and infrared-guided weapons are used.
